New farmer project seeks farmer guidance on crops and milk prices

Washington AP reports the Agriculture Department started a four month trial mailing a commodity newsletter to 1,000 farmers in Kansas and Oklahoma and 1,000 in Iowa and Indiana. It explains wheat price outlook and loan provisions, seeks feedback on continuing the effort and expanding coverage to feed grains and livestock. The dairy stockpile grows while milk price support costs rise, with several newsletters planned for early 1978 and a Dec 22 report on winter wheat and 1978 production.

Dim livestock outlook for 1978 from Agriculture Dept

Washington reports the Agriculture Department foresees dim prospects for livestock producers. Large fed beef supplies through 1974 and into 1975 pressure prices, though reduced calf inventories may lift cow and calf values. Prices for choice-grade steers at central markets could run near 40 dollars per 100 pounds in early 1978 with small early price gains for red meat.
