Nine American women lead civilian defense apathy bashers
ESYHER VAN WAGONER reports that nine regional assistant directors of the Federal Civil Defense Administration, all prominent public servants, aim to convert American complacency about civil defense into active preparation. The group, led by FCDA administrator Joan L. Whitehurst, spans nine regions from Boston to San Francisco, each with noted local officials. They argue a robust civil defense framework can serve peacetime disaster readiness as well as wartime needs. They stress the job’s unglamorous nature and urge sustained public engagement to counter the “it can’t happen here” mindset.
