Train Robber Joe Newton Becomes Uvalde Legend
In Uvalde Texas 83 year old Joe Newton, once a train and bank robber during the 1920s, is celebrated as a local celebrity and folk hero. He led the Newton Boys in up to five train heists and numerous bank raids, claiming little harm was done and explaining a motive of retaliating against insurance fraud. After multiple imprisonments, he retired to Uvalde with his wife and dogs, living quietly while shaping a storied reputation that outlives his brothers and legal limits.
