Move To Cut Taxes Gains Force Democrats Join GOP On Lower Income Levy

A Republican plan to cut personal income taxes by about 5 percent next June 30 gained Democratic support in Congress on Tuesday. Democrats on the House Ways and Means committee said they would cooperate, noting existing law provides a roughly 8 percent cut by December 31, 1983. Rep. Daniel A. Reed, soon chairing the committee, planned to introduce a tax cut bill on opening day of the new session. The proposal would advance half of the tax reduction from December 31, 1953, at a cost of about 1.8 billion to the treasury, with the remainder to occur as scheduled. Reed said the move is the first step in a broader Republican tax and spending reduction program. He expects cross‑party support. Reed also favored allowing the corporate tax cut to expire on schedule June 30.
