The Baytown Historical Museum kicks off its 27th annual Christmas Tree Fantasy with an open house Monday at 6 p.m. Visitors can vote for their favorite trees by casting ballots, as groups or individuals display themed decorations for bragging rights. Santa Claus will be on hand.
The Ybarra siblings grew up in the La Porte run Mexican restaurant El Toro and spread the family brand across Greater Houston. Eugene Ybarra started in La Porte in 1960, bought El Toro after Hurricane Carla, and today the family owns nearly two dozen locations including Iguana Joe's and Johnny Tamale. The clan emphasizes hard work, education, fairness, and community service in Houston, Texas, and Mexico.
In early years Eugene Ybarra hired a handful of workers to produce corn tortillas for El Toro and local restaurants, achieving about 200 dozen per hour. By 1989 El Matador Foods formed, expanding to flour tortillas and fried chips for retail. The Bayway Drive facility now makes corn and flour products and distributes to Texas and beyond. The Baytown operation serves Baytown and Decker Drive restaurants, with the newest and largest El Toro facility.
Local celebrities will serve dinner at Outback Steakhouse Tuesday from five to nine p.m. Proceeds go to the Baytown Blue Santa Program aiding underprivileged children with wrapped gifts. The Baytown Police Department officers and detectives run the drive, started in the 1970s, funded solely by community donations.
Teresa Black, Baytown Junior School, uses The Baytown Sun to teach integrated language arts across sixth to eighth grades. She notes high STAAR reading pass rates among eighth graders and says the daily paper helps students engage with current events, not just books.
Kaitlyn Alyssa and Lauren Gainer of Baytown celebrated receiving their Aggie rings at Clayton Williams Jr. Alumni Center. Teacher Sharon Jeffrey, who taught all three in Baytown, recalls the girls’ identical appearance and the personal bond built since kindergarten. Parents surprised by three babies born November 19, 1992 in Temple, Texas, moved to Baytown for family support. A note hints at a Gerber Baby connections tale continuing on page 5A.
