Dogs visit patients at Houston Methodist San Jacinto hospital bringing comfort to those receiving care. The program features trained therapy dogs interacting with patients in patient rooms and common areas to ease anxiety and lift spirits.
Goose Creek CISD is growing faster than projected with a 4 percent rise in students over last year. Superintendent Dr. Salvador Cavazos, in a Baytown Kiwanis Club talk, notes district enrollment tops 21,500 with 21,592 students, 1,500 teachers, and 2,400 staff. Bus routes total 650 serving 16,204 daily riders. Major new elementary schools are under construction, a third planned, as the district navigates its 38th year. Demographics show 58 percent Hispanic, 23 percent white, 16 percent African American, 3 percent other, with about 66 percent of students classified as low socio-economic.
In Baytown rivalry week, Robert E. Lee high school head coach Kerry Jr. reflects on history and the team’s preparation. The fifth-year coach emphasizes lessons learned from local battles and the upcoming confrontation with Baytown rivals.
Charles Allen Dixon III, linked to a Baytown burglary and several thefts, was killed during an alleged burglary attempt on Brentwood Drive. DNA on a brick tied him to a prior break in March. Accomplice Michael McDaniel, 26, also wounded. Det. Eric Freed noted Dixon’s prior felony history.
Baytown will open two water parks for a three day Labor Day weekend. Pirates Bay Waterpark runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday through Monday, Calypso Cove from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This fall Calypso Cove closes after Labor Day, while Pirates Bay stays open on weekends through September or until cold weather.
