EPA report finds Baytown refineries mainly not red flags
The EPA Toxic Releases Inventory shows Cedar Bayou Chevron Phillips among state top ten for production related PBT releases in 2001 with 102,204 pounds. The Seguin Structural Metals plant led Texas with over 12 million pounds. Chevron Phillips says 2002 releases dropped about 20 percent after enhanced fugitive emissions monitoring and process chemistry changes.

Fabian Becomes Third Atlantic Hurricane Far From Land
The storm strengthened from tropical storm status to a hurricane with 75 mph winds. Fabian was about 1,075 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and moving west, then expected to curve north and miss the Caribbean chain. Forecasters cautioned it is too early to determine any potential land threat.

Library program helps adults learn to read in Baytown
BAYTOWN Joe Lugo began learning to read at age 35 through Sterling Municipal Library’s literacy program. The free one on one tutoring started in 1986 and last year enrolled 30 students who logged over 800 hours. Training sessions for volunteers are Sept 20 and Sept 27. Lugo, now able to read with his son and the Bible, mentors other adults and prisoners at Baytown jail while pursuing his Christian faith.

Raffle to Aid Beach City Landfill Fight Ends Monday
A fundraiser raffle offers a Tow Dodge truck and a four wheel ATV to help cover over 50,000 in legal costs from Beach City residents suing the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
