Category 5 Hurricane Katrina barrels toward New Orleans with 160 mph winds and a 28-foot surge, forcing a mandatory evacuation of the below sea level city. Forecasters warned Mississippi and Alabama also face danger as Katrina expanded to a monster storm threatening a sunrise landfall.
Evacuees from New Orleans and surrounding Louisiana cities crowded hotel lobbies in Baytown with children and pets. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation for a city of 485 000. Katrina, a Category 5 storm with 175 mph winds, was expected to hit today. By Sunday afternoon many evacuees were directed to other hotels with available vacancies. Margie Sanders described the Holiday Inn Express as a mad house and Pat Payne called Sunday devastating as staff scrambled to accommodate guests.
A Baytown Sun Q and A notes TxDOT reviewed eastbound I-10 near Spur 330 in 2003 and found extending the exit and adding advance signage would improve weaving for trucks. Although not standard practice far in advance, a signing upgrade project may include this option.
