Kennedy dies after long battle with brain cancer in 2008
Senator Edward M. Kennedy dies at age 77 after a May 2008 brain tumor diagnosis and a grueling treatment. Despite early predictions, he survived more than a year, allowing family members to say their goodbyes and reflect on his decades of leadership. Known for his liberal pragmatism, he bridged divides on social legislation and shaped Capitol Hill with a vigorous, forceful presence and Irish charm.
