Massive cocaine seizure stops on I-10 near Winnie

A 1977 Chevrolet Blazer carrying 156 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of 22.473 million was stopped on Interstate 10 near Winnie. Colombian Alberto Rodriguez and Rafael Antonio Araque, both living in Florida, are jailed in Chambers County on aggravated possession charges with bonds set at 1 million each.

Lee College fall enrollment tops 3000 on main campus

Lee College opened fall term with about 3,080 students registered over Aug 21 and 22, closely matching 1983 totals. Late registration runs through Sept 5. Extension programs at South Liberty County report 101 regular and 23 high school students, with courses mostly at Liberty High and Liberty Middle Schools.

Third company not needed council denies taxi permit

Baytown City Council rejected a request to issue a permit for another taxicab company after a public hearing on James E. Harding’s Allied Cab and City Cab Service. A second reading of the measure failed to attract a second. The council also moved to pursue federal Urban Mass Transit funds for the Senior Citizen Taxi Program and discussed METRO service outside its area. It approved fire department radio system plans and bid readiness, reallocating unused police radio funds to the fire system, and added microwave equipment costs to the 1984 85 budget. The library’s Public Library Avenue was renamed Mary Elizabeth Wilbanks Avenue. Wilbanks resigned from the council after 11 years.

Eiland Becomes Executive Director Of Southeast Texas Housing Finance

Baytown Forecast Shows Hot Weather With Tstorms Possible
