Rural Co-ops Face Over Ten Billion Financing Need
Dallas AP report quotes Glen Newton, Texas representative on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association board, stating rural electric cooperatives will require more than 10 billion dollars to operate over the next 15 years. He says over half must come from private lenders, with federal loans handling the rest, as operating costs have risen. Cooperatives, once focused on farmer electricity, now support recreation, irrigation, and field pumps, with government funding unlikely to cover all costs.
