Airlines Negotiations Fail as 12000 Walk Out
AFLACIO Transport Workers Union strike at Pan American halted negotiations after a federal mediator deemed an insurmountable impasse. About 1,100 to 1,260 workers walked out at JFK, with 2,500 off duty on the Pacific Coast and Hawaii. Pickets appeared in Miami as Pan American warned flights would likely be grounded. The union seeks a 15 percent raise, shorter work weeks, and improved fringe benefits for maintenance and flight service staff. Cape Kennedy workers abstained due to a no strike pact with the government.
