Sunday Closing Law Ends Silent Emergency Loopholes
The Texas Legislature repealed the 1961 Sunday closing law and removed the emergency purchase exemption. The new statute bans sales of clothing furniture electronics jewelry and many household goods on consecutive Saturdays and Sundays. Violations carry fines up to 500 dollars and up to six months in jail, with separate offenses for each sale. Harris County lawmakers and Galveston area senator A R Schwartz are noted in the record.
