Oldest east Harris County road traced to 1837 plan
The 1837 Commissioners Court appointed George Patrick John Moore and Christian Smith to lay out a Houston to Liberty mail road via Harrisburg Lynchburg and Cedar Bayou. Overseers enforced work, road classes defined, and routes tracked from Houston along today's Wallisville Road to Liberty County with ferries, later bridges, and a rerouted Liberty road in 1839. Needlepoint Road remnants persist into today. Chuck Chandler leads Baytown Historic Preservation Association.
