The Sun will publish a multiweek series over the coming Sundays examining the Angelou Economics report and its assessment of the local business climate workforce education infrastructure quality of life and development efforts.
An online survey of 371 respondents, compiled for Baytown by Angelou Economics, shows residents feel safe and value low living costs and proximity to Houston, but dislike shopping options and city aesthetics. They rate location and commute highly, yet doubt outsiders and locals see the city positively.
Lee College and San Jacinto hospital highlight a looming nursing gap as 21 graduates completed the licensed practical nursing program. The piece notes a nationwide shortage, with nursing students declining 20 percent from 1995 to 2003, and cautions on patient care amid the predicted decade of drought.
The Texas Department of Health begins a preliminary cancer cluster study in Chambers County to map higher than expected cancer diagnoses over time without identifying sources. From 1996 to 2000 the county recorded 414 cancer incidences and 215 cancer deaths in a 26 000 population area with 76 cancer types led by digestive, colon, rectum and breast cancers. Anahuac resident Cindy Drier urged the study noting local concerns as her son Brooks battled a brain tumor and later remission.
Goose Creek Country Club hosted the Hugh McMurrain Lee High School Class of 1944 reunion with 85 graduates and spouses. Guests, many unseen since graduation, scanned old yearbooks while pianist Leslie Light played 1940s hits and a letter from a missing classmate offered reflections on wartime unity and resilience.
