Brunson Theater Baytown’s Opening to Enduring Legacy
The Brunson Theater in Baytown opened August 23 1949 as part of H E Brunson’s Baytown theater group. It featured a grand opening program with local celebrities a first ticket auction for charity and a first film Yes Sir Thats My Baby starring Donald O Connor Gloria De Haven and Charles Coburn. After decades of decline attendance fell with television and small town theaters closed nationwide culminating in foreclosure in 1997 and near demolition in 1999 before revival efforts by residents Goose Creek Historical Foundation and city officials stalled the project. The building remains a symbol of a bygone era with ongoing debate about its fate.
