Twenty three years ago today Hurricane Alicia struck the Houston Galveston region from the Gulf of Mexico. The storm devastated Baytown and contributed to the decline of the Brownwood subdivision. Alicia formed days earlier and reached Category 3 at landfall, seen as milder than Katrina and Rita but still deadly.
The 1983 storm Alicia triggered 23 tornadoes from Galveston to Tyler with winds up to 157 mph near Tyler. Twenty-one died, 25 hospitalized, 3,094 injured or ill. Damages reached $2 billion statewide, $1.25 million in Goose Creek schools Baytown.
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center staff collected 14 donations at United Way of Baytown Area’s first drive, short of the 25 hoped for. Donor David Martinez, planning a kidney transplant for his wife Celia, said the event highlighted the importance of blood and inspired him to donate. The drive’s “a pint for a pint” theme drew community participation.
Chambers County officials outline a cautious 2007 budget focused on holding new spending, bolstering reserves, and boosting services with modest hiring. The plan cuts the tax rate from 50.323 to 49.679 cents per $100 while levied taxes rise about 8 percent due to a 19 percent jump in certified property values, increasing revenue by roughly $1.3 million to a total around $20.3 million. Aims include a $400,000 surplus to support a five year reserve goal of $2 million, plus a 3.5 percent across the board pay raise for county employees.
Baytown Police charged Alfred Lamar Smith, 22, with aggravated robbery in the Tuesday Wal-Mart robbery on Garth Road. Police said two other suspects, one named and one unnamed, remain at large as the investigation continues. The first three suspects, Fallon Donato 19, Jacobbe Barefield 20, and Joyce Gonzales, all Baytown, appeared in Harris County court with arraignment set for September. A Halloween-masked gunman and another man robbed the store, threatening a cashier and fleeing within about two minutes.
