Prohibit Statements to Press Urged by Harvard Dean
Harvard Law Dean Erwin Griswold urged barristers and police to bar all public statements or evidence about criminal cases before or during trials. He argued pretrial publicity harms fair trials, citing Kennedy assassination coverage and Oswald case, and urged strict ethics rules enforced by bar associations and courts. He called for criminal contempt penalties for violators and a return to pretrial information control to protect justice and the free press.
