Ike To Proclaim New Code For U.S. Prisoners Of War
President Eisenhower will proclaim a new code of conduct for U.S. service members who may become prisoners of war. The code, to be issued by executive order from the Denver White House, aims to standardize prisoner treatment and outline silent response to captors while allowing some military discretion. Defense Secretary Wilson convened a panel after Korean War disclosures, noting varying service policies on indoctrination and treatment. The Army and Marines favored strict prisoner behavior while the Air Force was more lenient, and hundreds of cases led to prosecutions for collaboration and related offenses.
