Crosby Man Killed in Car Truck Collision
A Crosby man died and three others were injured in a four-vehicle crash on Highway 90 near the San Jacinto River bridge about 9:45 a.m. Friday. Ches ter Freeman, 55, of Crosby, driver of a gasoline truck, died at the scene. James Ira Smith, 43, of Houston, a passenger in a dump truck, suffered burns and was hospitalized. Also injured were Little, the dump truck owner, and Ross Edward Smith, 22, of Houston, who sustained a broken collar bone. The gasoline and dump trucks ignited after the collision and fire crews from Crosby, Channelview, Highlands, and Sheldon contained the blaze within 10 to 15 minutes. Traffic remained tied up about four hours.

Options Being Taken In Barbers Hill area development
A 4000 acre industrial project is planned in Barbers Hill area of West Chambers County with about 2000 acres already under option. Judge Oscar F. Nelson Jr. announced at a Baytown Chamber luncheon that the developer’s identity is not yet revealed. He outlined plans for growth through 1990 with U.S. Steel Baytown Works as the first major industry, followed by Houston Lighting and Power and Mobry Chemical. The area’s population rose from 7500 in 1950 to over 13000 in 1970, with land values up to 600 percent higher, and recent sales near 2500 an acre. Keys to growth include Interstate 10 and water, with roads and industry in plans.
