Monkey Laws Teacher Seeks Freedom Back In Arkansas
Susan Epperson a 24 year old biology teacher at Little Rock Central High School led Arkansas Education Association litigation against the three year old monkey law banning Darwin’s theory in classrooms. A Chancery Court judge ruled the law unconstitutional saying it restrains inquiry. The state appeals to the Arkansas Supreme Court and then the U.S. Supreme Court as Epperson and her attorneys continue to fight. The case raises questions on limits to free speech in public schools and whether the law is a reasonable regulation of education. Gov Faubus supports the law as a mechanism to keep wayward teachers in line.
