Drowns In Canal In Mont Belvieu Youth Trapped

A Mont Belvieu youth drowned late Wednesday in the Dayton canal near Old River after being swept under a bridge pipe. two rescuers were pulled toward the whirlpool but managed to pull the victim free. Stayton, 20, was later pronounced dead at the funeral home. Survivors include his stepfather and mother, Jesse Avian and Mrs Arnold Mackay, sister Miss Benelle Stayton, and several aunts and uncles. The funeral is set for Friday at Paul Lee Funeral Home with burial in Barbers Cemetery, Mont Belvieu.

Widely Known Lodge Leader Dies at 56

Ruby Heflin of Baytown aged 56 died after a long illness. She was a dedicated member of the Knights of Pythias and the Order of Eastern Star Cedar Bayou chapter No 11. Funeral services are planned with Cedar Bayou Methodist Church minister Rev Elna Love presiding. The graveside rites will be conducted by Eastern Star. Heflin, wife of Tom Heflin, held leadership roles in the local fraternal orders and was active in community service. Her death ends a long public service.
