City council tonight trimmed the Fire Department budget, slicing 27 830 from Fire Chief A H Lintleman’s request and 320 000 for a new fire truck at Station 1 and 33 000 for a West Baytown station. The cuts may be restored if funds remain after other line items, or paid from a permanent improvement fund using 3120 000 in yearly taxes from Humble Oil and Refining Company. Lintleman’s pay rises to 250 total.
Cynthia Woodard, nine, daughter of Mr and Mrs G H Woodard of DePort Texas, drowned at Camp Allen on Trinity Bay during a 30 day summer encampment. Lifeguards found her in four feet of water near two sandbars after she disappeared from a supervised swimming party of 35 children. The camp used a buddy system and check in with counselors. her sister Janice 12 was present. Officials were notified and her body sent to DePort for funeral arrangements. Judge Fred Chitty was away on vacation.
Pauli D Crippen 28 driving toward Baytown at 245 am lost control on Decker Drive near Texas Avenue. The Goose Creek ISD maintenance worker suffered a broken left arm possible internal injuries cuts and bruises. His car left the pavement rolled six times ending upright 312 feet from the curve. Beadie of Wooster said Crippen’s car passed them shortly before the crash and he was transported to San Jacinto Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
Baytown's Company E of the 36th Division heads to Camp Polk Louisiana for a two week training. About 75 guardsmen board buses at dawn for a six hour ride. The unit, part of the Texas 38th Infantry Division, will undergo 102 hours of scheduled training including tactics and close air support demonstrations with fighter bombers and napalm. Corporal Guy Winstead and Sergeant James Bond join administrative and communications schools.
