St Peters Basilica Turns Arena For Vatican Council

The Vatican installs grandstands across St Peter's vast basilica to seat 2,800 for the Second Vatican Council beginning Oct 11 under Pope John XXIII. Ivory skeletal stands rise to the main altar as 10 tiers of seats desks and kneelers are built for cardinals officials and delegates with modern tech including tape recording and a split-second vote computer. Latin will be the official language and 342 seminarians train as Latin stenographers to handle varied inflection.
