Ship Channel plant begins large diameter pipe output
AO Smith Corporation of Texas and Sheffield Steel Corp, both owners of the pipe mill, report the new $5 million Ship Channel plant is producing large diameter welded steel pipe for oil and gas. The plant, on schedule for August start, employs 400 plus workers and aims for about 40 000 tons monthly by October as a plate mill adds skelp and increases plate supply. The joint venture includes AO Smith of Milwaukee and Sheffield Steel, a unit of Armco.
