Woman Receives Artificial Heart Pump at Houston Hospital
Mrs Esperanza del Valle Vasquez, 37, of Mexico City, nears day four on an artificial heart pump at Methodist Hospital. The left ventricular bypass now handles about 25 percent of the heart’s workload, down from 40 percent earlier, as doctors plan gradual reductions to allow the natural heart to rest and heal. The patient, who has long suffered from heart failure after rheumatic fever, can sit up briefly, eat softly, and receive visits while the device remains attached by two tubes to the heart and aorta. The removal date remains undetermined. she is the fifth to receive the device in the United States, with four prior patients having died.
