Smoking ban battle in Baytown heated council debate
Local business owner James Haarmeyer clashed with coalition spokesman Richard Ehlers over similarities between the proposed ordinance and the current ban. City leaders weighed enforcement implications, vehicle signage, and technical drafting issues while a citizen petition surpassing the required signatures prompted a public hearing set for August 24. The measure, tracing to a 1999 ordinance, seeks to ban smoking in enclosed workplaces with options for a referendum in November. Community council members pressed for focus on intent over minor drafting details.
