Berlin Wall Seven Years Old and Still Rising
The Berlin Wall reaches seven years on Wednesday as East German builders extend and heighten the border with West Berlin. An intricate system of fences, minefields, and 14,000 soldiers blocks escape, with West Berlin reporting 63 known deaths in seven years, 47 by gunfire. Most West Berliners avoid the wall, and new travel restrictions intensify residents’ sense of isolation while Western troops maintain a visible reminder of the division.
