42d Felton announced as campaign amuse for the annual Cormmun Ghat fund drive in Baytown. Jones Harrop, president of the Council of Members, made the announcement today.
In Baytown the Junior Band announced practice begins Monday under Band Director Burkett. Horace Mann players and Rendsmen will perform at a matinee with two songs sung by Pamlett accompanied by a video audience.
Felton named head of the Chest Drive campaign in Baytown with Harrop as vice chairman and a campaign advisory group including Woods Ballard Hale Wilson Beavers and Fennigan. The annual effort also involves local agencies and plans a unified Red Feather drive.
A weak cool front brought scattered thundershowers to North and West Texas with Baytown logging a 95 degree high after a 95 degree day. The heat wave claimed more lives, including Mrs. Cecil Hennigan of Orange, as several towns reported rainfall totals from Amatillo to Lubbock and Tyler.
Washington and Mexico signed a new Bracero agreement to recruit thousands of Mexican workers for cotton and other crops on American farms. The pact, replacing the 1945 deal, places U S responsibility on fair pay and treatment and accompanies Senate approval of 3950 000 for recruitment through the Labor Department. Senator Tom Connally warned that without workers hundreds of thousands of bales of cotton could be lost.
The Grey Council backs cleanup by purchasing a tractor mower for vacant lots at 1722 from Highway Equipment Co Houston and a six ton roller from J E Ingram Equipment Co San Antonio for 4960. The city saves over 1000 by choosing a used roller while urging owners to clean their lots. Councilman Milton Campbell asks for a formal program for mower use.
West Main traffic will be detoured for two weeks as a water main is laid between West and South Baytown. The city manager cited slow progress due to buried water and gas lines but expected faster work once the residential section is cleared. Detour routes will bypass the blocked area from West Baytown to Goose Creek Stream bridge and back to the bridge at South Baytown.
City Council approved nine oil well permits in Bolster Bowie and Travis Streets south of Main, with three required size changes to meet rules. Fees totaling 4500 were collected. Wells include R K Kimball No 1, C A Pennington No 1 in Bolster. E J Malick No 3, RV Pilgrim J D Bays No 1, EL Slegie No 1 in Bowie. Lerner No 1, Earl Strawn No 1 in 600 block Bowie. Compton No 4 in 500 block Bowie. D L Womack No 1 at Travis and Bayless. Drillers include J J Broaddus, Allen A Bolton, H A Potter, Borton, and Barton.
Funeral services are planned for 4 p.m. in Nacogdoches for Technical Sergeant John Hensley 39 who died at Fiala Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Nacogdoches he served in World War II and Korea, re enlisted in 1937, and recently returned to Raytown from Korea on rotation leave. Survivors include a 16 year old daughter in Florida, five sisters and three brothers.
United Nations negotiator Vice Admiral C Turner Joy accused the Communists of refusing to bargain at the 21st armistice session. The Reds insisted on a six mile buffer around the 38th parallel, threatening collapse of talks. Joy said their inflexible stance blocked progress and accused them of seeking a political price for any respite. The meeting adjourned with plans to reconvene at 11 am tomorrow Baytown time.
Helene Sweeney found his Buick sedan parked on Market Street and woke in Forest Park four miles away. Robert Brownridge, 17, and an accomplice took $385 from him after moving him from the car and dumped him on the grass. Brownridge was captured after a car chase. the associate escaped.
Texas Rangers raided Galveston Esquire Club after a dramatic early morning strike using sledgehammers. Police reported the operation targeted suspected illegal activity and contained no immediate injuries. Proceedings continued as officers secured the premises and collected evidence.
A coroner in New Roads Louisiana convened a jury to probe nine deaths from a pre dawn collision of the Southern Belle streamliner with a troop train carrying 288 Marines. Coroner J C Roberts doubted learning the cause as crewmen are dead, suspecting misapplied orders.
Two F-30 jet planes from Ellington Air Force Base Houston disappeared on separate West Texas flights. A search is being directed by Ellington officials as crews scour the area for the missing aircraft and pilots.

Private Daniel A. Oxford parked on Utah Street during leave and crashed head on into a parked car. He received medical care for a deep scalp gash and paid a $10 fine for not keeping proper lookout. The parked car belonged to Clifford M Bond. his wife Miléard Bond was fined for parking on the wrong side.
Allied air and naval raids pound Hungnam port area as UN forces press near the 38th parallel. B 29s drop about 100 tons of bombs on supplies and reinforcements. Reports say thousands of enemy trucks and vehicles are targeted in rear areas amid ongoing fighting Thursday night and Friday.
