Coogs emphasize youth as prep for next season
Crosby High Football plans around quarterback Dominic Merka as six returning offensive starters and four on defense anchor the squad. With Chance Casey injured late and Xavier Frank transferring to Dayton, Merka is expected to lead 1,565 passing yards and 762 rushing yards last season while junior Forrest Tyler stepped in at running back. The team, finishing third in District 19 4A, will feature an undersized but eager defense and a still developing offensive line.

Texas dove hunting set to open amid strong fall numbers and permits
The South Zone dove season runs Sept 18 to Nov 3 and Dec 26 to Jan 13, with a four day earlier close for the Special White-winged Dove Area. The daily bag tops at 15 birds, with limits on mourning and white tipped doves. Texas harvests about 6 million doves annually from 40 million in population, with a $300 million economic impact. The Public Hunting Program offers $48 annual permits. 140 hunting units span from South Texas to Panhandle. About 72 percent of dove units are in four metro regions. The department released a combined Public Hunting Map Booklet and Dove Hunting Supplement, with maps online from Aug 15. HIP certification is needed with license purchase, and licenses expire Aug 3 with 2009-2010 sales starting Aug 15. TPWD bands roughly 20,000 doves yearly and asks hunters to report leg bands at 1-800-327-BAND.
