Davis Man First Known to Recover From Monkey Disease
Rick Leger is the first person known to recover from a rare virus spread by monkeys. UC Davis virologist Dr. Carlos Espana notes 24 recorded cases of Herpes simiae, with 20 dead, three with major permanent damage, and Leger the sole survivor. Leger credits prayers and faith during his illness from April of the prior year.
