Equalization Board Urges Single City School Appraisal Office
The Baytown area equalization board recommended creating a single appraisal office to determine taxable values for all properties under school district and city jurisdiction. A new map of property ownership should be prepared, as the 1955 map is outdated, with current lines and rights of way. The board noted Humble Oil as a large taxpayer and endorsed a local firm to assist in valuing industries and minerals. Public hearings on industrial properties and general assessments showed most residential and local business values near 40 percent of market value.
