Troops to Vietnam May Not Be Replaced By Pulling Divisions
Washington reports that the Pentagon plans to pull large chunks of remaining combat divisions from the United States to Vietnam and may not replace them. The move would support President Johnson’s new troop authorization raising U.S. commitment to 325,000 by next summer. White House advisers Clark Clifford and Gen Maxwell D. Taylor returned from visits to Vietnam and allied nations, noting increased pressure but not requesting more allies. The plan would use Strategic Reserve units now kept at home to counter contingencies, with replacements possible after a year to 18 months, and an alternative would be raising draft calls beyond 24,090 monthly.
