Environmentalists led by Lois Gibbs join Texans Together and the San Jacinto River Coalition to demand complete cleanup of the San Jacinto Waste Pits Superfund Site. At a Lee College workshop Baytown Mayor Stephen DonCarlos praised activist Lois Gibbs and San Jacinto River Coalition director Jacquelyn Young for urging full removal of toxic waste in the San Jacinto River pits. Gibbs recounted becoming an environmentalist after a 1978 discovery.
Baytown Police say 25 year old Walter Pickering turned himself in after the fatal shooting of 32 year old Glen Flowers at a Valero on North Alexander Drive. Flowers died at 12 12 a m after a single gunshot wound. Witnesses described a gray Chevy pickup fleeing, with the plate traced to Pickering. Police noted the men were acquaintances.
Chambers County Sheriff’s Office probes missing funds in the Environmental Health and Permitting Department. Sheriff Brian Hawthorne confirms a criminal investigation with multiple suspects and no arrest yet. County Judge Jimmy Sylvia notes former director Sidney L. Lewis Jr. was terminated for mismanagement and equipment misuse, with Rex Tunze serving as interim director while a replacement is sought.
