Historian Barnett argues Travis, once seen as a plain soldier, matched a refined silhouette from 19th century evidence. He compares reports from Mexican troops and Travis’s slave with a preserved 1850s portrait of Charles Travis to suggest the lieutenant colonel bore a fatherly likeness.
Barnett's finished portrait presents William B. Travis in a cadet uniform with grey eyes and strong features framed by bushy sideburns and rust hair. He argues his depiction is the most accurate available and aims to publish it in future Texas history works. He notes Travis could have become more famous than Fannin had the Alamo story unfolded differently.
Barnett’s research finds Travis appearance largely undocumented with scarce sources. Only one sketch by Wiley Martin is believed to exist from his lifetime, though experts question its authenticity. The limited evidence leaves his exact look uncertain.
