Honors and tragedy mark the 24th Infantry Regiment story

A closer Army study in 1987 examined the all black 24th Infantry Regiment and its Korea War performance. The Deuce Four traced a history from 1869 frontier actions to World War II maps and hot battles in Korea where distrust and prejudice affected leadership and unit cohesion. The study found no single cause for wartime outcomes, but racial bias limited advancement of Black officers, while some white officers were ill suited. The unit displayed courage in combat but suffered heavy losses, and its history ends with its deactivation on October 1, 1951. Baytown resident Ray Wilson, retired Exxon supervisor, can be reached at rayehasen msn.com.
