Open House at Ross Sterling High School to be held Saturday and Sunday with public invited. Saturday hours 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 2 to 5 pm. GEN Wilson to present program at Chamber of Commerce luncheon Friday with John M. Stuart to speak. Horace E. Smith of 435 Kollingwood named juror for Harris County Grand Jury second August term.
Carroll Allen Stewart, 21, and a Baytown family rush to aid victims amid a sniper attack near the University of Texas. He was struck in the ankle while aiding injured students and securing bystanders as bullets felled others. Stewart, who works with ambulance operators, kept helping until police halted the shooting. He described seeing people in bloodied streets and urged taking cover as another round rang out.
W C Jones of Esso Research and Engineering Co will chair a one day Houston meeting on petroleum GC applications sponsored by Varian Associates. It will have five papers and a panel discussion. Rough Riders plan a 7:30 p.m. Thursday meeting at Lakewood Club House to elect a new arena director.

Robert E. Lee honors continue as Pete Sultis is named head coach of the South School boy All Star team to play the North in Houston. Sultis, a 20-year veteran, will lead in Baytown’s first era of split loyalty with Ross Sterling opening this fall.
Missouri Pacific Railroad Co. seeks a 22 foot high bridge seven miles from the bayou mouth and east of Tri-Cities Beach Road as part of a spur from Baytown into U S Steel Corp property. Baytown's Red Pruett backs the site if the bridge is raised later for navigation and if state and federal approvals align.

In Washington Inland Deer Co of Chicago boosted strip and sheet metal prices by 2 to 3 dollars a ton Tuesday triggering a White House strategy session led by Gardner Ackley. Inland chairman Joseph L Block framed the rise as moderate while officials weighed whether other major producers would follow and how the administration would respond.
The Bayshore Rod Reel and Gun Club will meet at 8 p.m. Wednesday to discuss Mayo Shell Co. of Houston's dredging permit request for BaytownArea sites from Cedar Bayou mouth to Tin Can Reef and beyond Moody’s, Deep, Cowbarn, Stevensom, and Hannah Reefs. Dredge to 40 feet. President Grover Edge urges citizen attendance and a Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission protest is planned.
Baytown Laborers Local 313 and two other Houston area locals approved a contract with the Houston Chapter of the Associated General Contractors and the Construction Employers Association of Texas after a 24 day strike. The pact includes a 55.1 cent an hour wage increase over three years, overtime and shift differentials, a 12.5 cent premium for handling dangerous materials, a hiring hall, foreman assignment rule changes, and quarterly joint committee oversight.
The Channelview School Board sold 1,117,006 in bonds to Underwood Neuhaus and Co Inc and Howles Winston and Co Inc Houston. The sale Tuesday night at 4.98829 per cent funds 42 new classrooms and 11 teaching units. The district had one bid and voters approved a 2.1 million bond issue last June.
Lee College students in need may still apply for a Texas Opportunity Plan Fund loan. The state pays interest during college and half after graduation. Applications are in Miles office. Work study applications are also available for on and off campus jobs with August 16 deadline and full-time enrollment requirements. Funds for the National Defense Student Loan Fund have not yet been allocated but are expected.
The Baytown Chamber of Commerce at a special meeting endorsed Missouri Pacific's proposed city route to the U S Steel site. President Eldon Berry was asked to deliver a resolution. City Manager Fritz Lanham was urged to act quickly. Berry, Dave Moore, G C Vaught, and Cecil Bobbitt were named to represent the chamber at a Monday city council meeting with U S Steel, Southern Pacific, and Missouri Pacific officials.
Pre-registration permits are issued for the fall term at Lee College registrar's office. Prompt registration dates include Aug 11 and Aug 18 from 1 to 4 pm in the auditorium and Student Union. Many Aug 18 permits remain available. Aug 12 permits issued. Regular registration is Sept 7. Students must obtain registration packets and meet with a counselor or department chairman to plan courses.
