Sheriff halts armed civilian ride along program

Chambers County Sheriff Monroe Kreuzer suspended the ride along program that allowed armed civilians to accompany deputies after the Commissioners Court condemned it. He directed all deputies not to allow any civilians to ride along until the matter is cleared up. Volunteers carry concealed handgun licenses but are not licensed officers, and liability forms were signed beforehand. See Ride Alongs on Page BA.

Roseland Spray Park Opens With Ribbon Cutting

Baytown prepares for the Roseland Spray Park grand opening at 5 p.m. Wednesday amid record heat. Mayor Alfaro and city officials will cut the ribbon. the first 50 children receive commemorative T-shirts. The park operates 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, features an automatic timing system, and honors a railroad motif tied to a 1957 steam train moved to Roseland Park. The project follows a December council decision and a $72,770 funding move from the See SPRAYGROUND on Page 8A.

Baytonians set early voting mark in municipal elections

845 residents voted by midday, surpassing the 1992 record of 644. Mayor's race features incumbent Pete Alfaro versus Charles Schaffer and David Evans. Council race includes Don Murray and challenger Russell Lorfing. Lee College regents race fields seven candidates.

Early voting across Baytown area shows varying turnout with 247 voters in the 8A political forum. Baytown debates include amending the city charter for five fire stations. Baytown murder trial set for Brain Thain in Fink case

A jury was seated to hear the murder trial of Brain Thain accused of killing 17 year old Kaci Fink in June. The trial opens at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Judge Susan Brown's 185th Court at the Harris County Courthouse. Fink, a Sterling junior, played varsity volleyball and soccer and belonged to the Sterling Band and Christian Student Union. She died June 15 at the Bayway Burnett intersection after Thain allegedly forced Fink and Crystal Davis into a car at gunpoint and fired inside the vehicle. Davis signaled for help and fled. Fink was found dead.
