Johnson, Joel Mack and National Secretaries Association announce nine week stenography and power study courses starting at seven p.m. Monday. Classes meet in the coffee lounge of Citizens National Bank near the library, with attendees bringing shorthand notebooks and powers.
Tides will be low at 9 42 p m and 1 04 am and high at 5 22 a m and 3 39 p m Sunday. Monday forecast shows low tides at 1 04 am and 10 82 pm with highs at 5 22 a m and 9 39 p m. Widely scattered thundershowers dampen Baytown Saturday night with a partly cloudy Sunday and temperatures up to a high.

Mary Petway a senior at Robert E Lee High School was named outstanding distributive education student of the year at the D E Club banquet at Tower Restaurant attended by 120. She serves as D E Club president and was mistress of ceremonial. Petway is employed at The Economy and carries 89 average. She was second in Miss Future Business Leaders of America statewide and awarded a 3000 scholarship to the University of Houston at the state convention in Galveston.
Funeral services for Dr. William Travis 79 longtime Baytown chiropractor will be at 3 pm Sunday at Cedar Bayou Methodist Church with Rev. Byron Lovelady officiating. Burial under Paul A Leo Funeral Home direction after services by Cedar Bayou Fawmble No. 381 AF&AM. He is survived by his widow and several children and grandchildren.
Washington AP reports a new U S move to halt the Laos war and seek a ceasefire as Prince Souvanna Phoumi and Boun Oum confront rebel forces. Kennedy spurred talks with allies in defense of freedom while the Security Council meets amid Cuba and Southeast Asia tensions.
Unseasonably cold conditions persist nationwide with 30s in the north and 50s to 60s in the south. Showers blanket Florida and Texas while the central Atlantic, Northeast and Northwest experience rain and some thunder showers. East winds gust to 40 miles per hour Roanoke and Virginia. northern Rockies see rain and northern plains snow. Temperatures remain cool with a gradual warmup from the central Plains to the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.
Heavy morning turnout reported in Baytown runoff with 1 100 to 1 139 residents voting by 11 am. Rioting and beer can throwing swept Galveston County and Texas City as officers halted a float of youths approaching the causeway. One Baytown man was injured in a Galveston riot. Dallas college students were jailed for weapons and liquor during the disturbances.
Work is underway on Channelview Independent School Districts 620000 dollar improvement program approved in a March bond election. Kreba Construction Co. of Houston serves as general contractor. Enrollment has surged from 565 in 1945 to 2000 this year, with forecasts of 3207 by 1962 as crowded conditions push new facilities including Viola Cobb Elementary. Voters also set April 4 for mayor and council races with four at large seats and incumbents not seeking re election.
The Travston Harris association mobile X ray unit will visit Baytown at Robert E Lee High School from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday for a month. Chest X rays will be taken and reports mailed to patients. Adults pay 10 cents and students 25 cents. Mrs John Sylvester president of the Baytown Womens Service League urges everyone over 12 to participate. Funds are supplemented by United Fund money and the unit offers TB screening at a low cost with league guardians coordinating attendance.
Baytown school cafeteria staff and volunteers completed an American Red Cross disaster training program led by Je von Ro Osun. The two hour session at San Jacinto Elementary School prepared participants to operate a self contained Red Cross kitchen and support emergency response.
A computer forecast in Baytown projects W C Pop Swain as mayor with 50.7 percent of the vote against Al Clayton 49.3 percent. The machine, using turnout 4300 and primary data, also predicts District 3 councilman Chris Hansen over Kenneth Badgett 55 to 45, District 6 winner J M Bryan over Fred Canant 63 to 37, and Ward over Pete Bryan by 7 percent, though certification awaits official results.
