After the 6.25 state tax and city and MDD levies the city can charge up to another half cent under state law. The maximum becomes 8.25 percent. Streets will be chosen with the same method used for the $20.4 million street repair bond from 2001. City staff will use the same 274 miles of roads data to select repairs and bid contracts through approved contractors.

Mundinger questions tax as Baytown weighs street vote
Councilman Scott Sheley seeks a special meeting to set uses and guidelines for the quarter cent street maintenance sales tax. Mayor pro tem Calvin Mundinger, amid a possible bid for mayor, says he may call the meeting and has reservations about supporting the tax given crime trends and a projected budget deficit. Critics say Mundinger is indecisive while opponents back the tax and candidates voice mixed views. Early voting runs May 1 to May 11 with locations at City Hall and Lee College.
