Baytown City Council will meet at 7 30 p m Thursday in city hall to review bids for the new city hall and community hall and handle any lengthy agenda items. Lee College Regents will meet at 6 30 p m Thursday in the college library.
Scattered showers and cooler Friday with temperatures expected between 72 and 82 degrees. Wednesday’s range was 73 to 83 degrees, and a 75 degree reading was logged at The Sun weather station at 6 am Thursday. No rainfall reported. Friday tides in Galveston will be low at 5 06 a.m. and high at 1 12 p.m.
Mildred Franklin, now in Houston, verifies a long ago Gander game score at the Sun office, settling a debate between her son Kirk and a Galveston Ball High ex at the University of Texas. Reports also note local figures and ongoing projects around Baytown including road and conduit work and school events.
Baytown City Council hears that bids for a new city hall come in 14 percent over the 1965 cost estimates. Grimshaw Construction Co. of Houston submitted the low bid at 835000, with rivals ranging up to 942400. Council to study architect Lowell Lammers report and complete bid tabulation before deciding.
Harris County DA Carol Vance spoke to Baytown Rotarians on the new Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, urging legislative changes via community pressure. He cited rising crime in Harris County with 62 murders and a 30 percent rise in armed robberies this year, and criticized jury or judge sentencing as a change in the code.
The sixth annual Youth Fair and Livestock Show begins Thursday with a downtown parade at 3 p.m. Poultry and rabbit judging results are released Thursday afternoon. Livestock judging Friday at 2:20 p.m. followed by awards at 4:30 p.m. A style show at 6 p.m. Friday and an open rodeo at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Saturday features a horse show at 8 a.m. and a Shetland pony show at 3 p.m. The fairgrounds are on North Main, a half mile north of Interstate 10.
General Telephone Co. reveals long range expansion plans as four major projects begin in Baytown. Crews replace and extend cables on North Main and Garth Road, upgrading four to one or two party service. A 900 pair line connects downtown to Baker Road, and 60 pair line links three to the San Jacinto River with 72 manholes and 120000 individual connections. Temporary outages expected during construction as new distribution systems go live.
Railroad Commissioner Byron Tunnell spoke in Baytown on a rise in oil and gas demand tied more to population growth and chemical production than Vietnam. He noted May quotas are at their highest since the Suez crisis and that pollution control remains a key issue after a recent legislative expansion of RR commission power. He attended a Baytown Rotary Club luncheon after a coffee hosted by local residents.
President Johnson attends a $1,000 a plate Democratic party fund raising ball at the Shamrock Hilton Hotel in Houston with Mrs. Johnson and Luci. A group of congressmen from five states will accompany him and sponsors expect 900 attendees from Texas Louisiana Arkansas Oklahoma and New Mexico. The president arrives at Houston International Airport before the event and will be introduced by Governor Connally before speaking at the dinner dance.
USS president Leslie Worthington announced that the Texas Works will be the official name and Baytown, Texas the official address for U S Steel’s Texas plant. The 2 Hinch plate mill will start once engineering is completed and Baytown gains prominence as an oil and chemical center with Cedar Point naming considerations set aside.
In a severe Dallas flood driven by heavy rains, five people died across Dallas and Garland. Victims include W L Perryman president of General American Oil Co and Dr Alfred W Harris. Fire crews rescued others from submerged cars and flooded streets as schools stayed open and plants paused work. Local rescue efforts focused on White Rock and Bachman Lake areas amid rising waters.
Lakewood may lose its Lakeside meeting place if funds fail to cover repairs. Only 188 of about 600 Lakewood families joined the Lakewood Civic Association for 1965 66, says LCA president James Froneberger. Dues are five dollars per family, and sponsorship may end if the drive falls short during the 1965 66 fiscal year ending in June.

A missing airliner wreckage sighted with 43 passengers six crew members. A Gulf Freeway accident near Ellington kills Rhonda Armstrong. Johnson confirms Thomas Manns resignation as under secretary of state for economic affairs.
Senator Ralph Yarborough will address Baytown democratic precinct leaders at 3:30 p.m. during a Harris County tour. He will meet locals at the Rebel Inn to discuss medicare industrialization and air and water pollution problems and will also speak at San Jacinto College and in Clear Lake City.
