Lawmakers urge restoring CHIP and Medicaid funding
Two Democratic Texas lawmakers Rep. Garnet Coleman and Rep. Elliott Naishtat proposed restoring funding for Medicaid and CHIP in a special session. Coleman floated using $450 million federal relief, $727 million general revenue, and $102 million rainy day funds, while Naishtat backed a $1 per pack cigarette tax increase to fund health services. CHIP enrollment fell 26 percent after renewals and new asset tests, though overall Medicaid/CHIP enrollment may exceed projections.
