Baytown opens new federal building open house
More than 100 attended the Baytown federal building open house and flax presentation ceremony held Wednesday afternoon. The nine thousand two hundred ninety square foot addition cost seven hundred forty eight thousand dollars and houses Selective Service Board No. 63 offices with other recruiters. A 50 star flag was presented by Baytown Veterans Service Officer Grover Edge, representing Robert R. Tuck Post 12, Veterans of Foreign Wars, with a VFW color guard participating. Swain presided, noting board members serve without pay and keep manpower records for East Harris County. Internal Revenue Service and military recruiters also operate in the building.

House Takes Up Tax Bill On Tuesday
The House voted 123 to 6 to take up Rep. Charles Wilsons corporate income tax bill Tuesday. A $25 billion state appropriation bill, largest in Texas history, moves to a joint conference committee after Wednesday voice vote. The conferees must bridge a $16 million gap between House and Senate two year spending from the General Revenue Fund starting Sept. 1. House SB1 would fund $380 million versus the Senate's $364 million. The House may study a corporate income tax proposal Friday to fill the gap between the $127 million sales tax and state needs.
