Sterling's softball team swept Pasadena Memorial 2-0 in the best-of-three bi district series, advancing to the area round. Tara Bell relieved Kenna Terry to escape a bases-loaded jam with two outs as third baseman Taylor Zink threw home for the game-ending forceout. The District 21SA champions improved to 26-8, with 10 hits aided by solid defense and timely hitting from Courtney Zink, Mary-Tyler Dobson, Bell, and Lauren Siple. Sterling will face the winner of Clear Brook and Fort Bend Austin in the next round.
La Porte overwhelmed Lee 9-1 to finish the series in two games. Lori Ward pitched all 10 innings in a 3-2 loss, while Samantha Shepard earned the win in relief as La Porte built a big fifth inning with five hits and six runs, clinching the sweep. Kayla McGrew and Haley Smith provided early Lee offense on doubles and singles.
Sterling and Atascocita finish 13-1 in district after a nine inning 7-6 victory over Kingwood. Trevor Swint and Brett Marshall led a 10 hit Sterling attack while Hunter Cervenka closed out the win. With playoff seeding unresolved, Sterling hosts Barbers Hill at 2 PM for a warmup before next weekend’s bi district round.
Robert E. Lee junior Zac Zellers counted a personal best 56 feet 9 inches to claim third in the shot put at Turner Stadium regional action. Sterling's Alyssa Cotten added a bronze in pole vault with 10 feet, while Lee's Michael Mahan and Jeremy Kempt and Sterling's Chacara Gibson posted modest marks. The meet winds to a close with finals today, and Zellers eyes a state bid but trails leaders Barbas and Weekend for Saurit.
