Navy seeks 335 million for Atomic Age fleet expansion
Admiral Forrest Sherman told the House Armed Services Committee the Navy seeks immediate authority to begin building an Atomic Age fleet including an atom powered submarine and three other experimental undersea craft. The plan, funded by a 1952 budget, envisions a 49 million dollar nuclear submarine and 50 million in projects such as small 250 ton engines and 7100 ton target subs, with conversions of existing ships and a cruiser and carrier modernization. Budget availability would start July 3, 1951, pending final approvals.
