Baytown's 300 year oak roots descendants nationwide

The Texas Avenue live oak in Baytown, more than 300 years old, inspires a citywide tree-planting program. Arbor Day plantings have yielded hundreds of descendants in Baytown and beyond to Florida. Notable adopters include Dr. Jackson Sasser, former Lee College president, with trees planted at his home and Santa Fe College.

Arbor Day tree giveaway in Baytown at Wetlands Center

Baytown Parks and Recreation hosts Arbor Day and offers over 1,600 one gallon trees including Live Oak Bald Cypress Eastern Redbud Red Maple Chickasaw Plum Bar Oak Nuttall Oak Sawtooth Oak Southern Crabapple American Beautyberry and Texas Avenue Oak. Robbery at San Jacinto Mall Targeting Mom and Daughter

A mother and daughter were robbed at knifepoint near Macy's on the south side of San Jacinto Mall. The attacker, a Hispanic man in his late 20s, fled in a white single cab Chevrolet Silverado on Garth Road after demanding purses and keys. About $200 in property was taken. Runoff forum set for U.S. 36 race at Lee College

GOP runoff candidates Brian Rabin and Ben Streusand will debate at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Tucker Hall Lee College, hosted by Lone Star Republicans. The event precedes the May 27 runoff to decide the Republican nominee for the U.S. House District 36 seat vacated by Steve Stockman. The format includes a job interview phase a debate and audience questions with doors opening at 4 p.m. The campus sits south of Felton and West Gulf streets.
