Veteran columnist Joe Benham recalls a long journalism career from TexasRepublic days to modern times. He reflects on aged colleagues, paychecks, and humble meals as a reminder of how the press once lived on little, with reminiscences of University of Texas waitresses, lobbying cocktail parties, and a Brazosport start at $70 per week.
