Grand jury to hear Torres in custody death case

Harris County prosecutors will present the in custody death of Luis Torres to a grand jury Thursday as LULAC and civil rights activists charge a bias toward police. Torres died January 20 after a Baytown police arrest. four officers were involved with one on paid leave and others reassigned.

Pilot Club honors top HS seniors in Baytown

Evening Pilot Club in Remington Park recognized four Baytown area seniors for exceeding academics and demonstrating leadership after personal challenges. Honorees were Sarah Halverson of Robert E. Lee High, Jordan Schmitt of Ross S. Sterling High, Joseph Gonzalez of Baytown Christian Academy, and Matthew Hutton of the School Community Guidance Center. mentors praised their achievements.

Bald YMCA volunteers raise 130000 for scholarships

YMCA staff and volunteers celebrated raising 130000 to fund scholarships for children in YMCA programs. Executive Director Jim Haugen promised to have his head shaved if the goal was met and agreed to paint his head with red white and blue. He planned to stand on the corner of Garth Road and Baker Road from 1 pm to 3 pm Thursday with a thank you sign. Barbara Trachte shaved Haugen’s head at the Tuesday night awards ceremony.

In Mont Belvieu at C T Joseph Hall Barbers Hill School complex fifteen candidates for mayor city council and school board debated spending records water infrastructure and growth. Incumbent Lonnie Follis and former mayor Bob Lee sparred over finances and transparency while council hopefuls outlined plans to improve water pressure zoning and services.

Hadnot honored for tireless CIS service in Baytown

In a National Volunteer Week event at Lee College, Thomas Hadnot received Communities In Schools board member of the year honors for thirty years of Baytown youth work. CIS Director Janet Stansbury lauded his leadership from three to thirteen campuses and his lifelong commitment to students and families. Hadnot, who called the award overwhelming, said he serves to do good rather than seek accolades.
