Activists press Waste Management over San Jacinto pits
Texans Together staged Earth Day 2014 protest at Waste Management HQ in Houston demanding action to clean up the San Jacinto Waste Pits, a federally designated superfund site north of the I-10 bridge. The pits hold paper mill waste dumped in the mid 1960s by Champion Paper and run by McGinnes Industrial Maintenance.

Clearing for FM 1409 work moves forward in Chambers County
Environmental clearance for the extension of FM 1409 from Old River to Cove is expected soon. Dan Nenbaum Engineering notes the segment north of I 10 will run near Mont Belvieu Eagle Drive behind the school district complex. Right of way acquisition is projected at 6 12 months, with construction on the $35 million project possible thereafter. The effort remains on budget as Chambers County benefits from a local gas drilling boom, while county leaders consider selling about 65 acres of school land grant property to fund a gas plant in far west Texas. County owns 4400 acres in Crockett County east of Fort Stockton yielding revenue from drilling and grazing leases. See county page 3.

Baytown Parks and Recreation will give away over 1,600 one gallon trees at the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education and Recreation Center on Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Trees include Live Oak Bald Cypress Eastern Redbuds Red Maple Chickasaw Plum Bar Oak Nuttall Oak Sawtooth Oak Southern Crabapple American Beautyberry and Texas Avenue Oak. State Rep Perez to Keynote Lee College Commencement
State Rep. Mary Ann Perez will deliver the keynote at Lee College commencement on Saturday May 10 in the Sports Arena. She represents House District 144 including Baytown Deer Park Houston Pasadena and other areas in southeast Harris County. Perez sits on Economic and Small Business Development International Trade Intergovernmental Affairs and Rules and Resolutions committees and earned a BBA from the University of Houston Downtown.
