Marine sacrifice inspires new junior high dedication
Channelview Independent School District held a ceremonial groundbreaking for Lance Cpl. Anthony Aguirre Junior High to honor fallen Marine Anthony Aguirre. The 2004 Channelview High School graduate sacrificed himself during a patrol in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, in February 2007, saving 25 fellow Marines. The school is funded by a $111 million bond package approved in 2009, and the district board named the school after Aguirre last year amid attendance by family, officials, veterans, and local dignitaries.

Shortfall Prompts GCCISD Budget Cuts Plan
Goose Creek CISD faces a 9 to 25 million dollar shortfall, about 5 to 15 percent of a 170 million dollar budget, prompting reliance on student growth, resignations, and admin cuts rather than layoffs or closures. The shortfall stems from 2006 tax and school finance overhauls, with state spending to be finalized after House and Senate reconciliations.
